What are we looking for?

To mark the 2018 Lunar New Year, we are seeking texts which:

Submissions may reflect the author’s cultural background or lived experience. They may emanate from other forms of connection the author has, or has had, with countries and cultures which celebrate the lunar calendar. Or they may simply be works of the imagination created in response to the theme.

Texts submitted in both English and other languages are welcome.

FAQs

What is Little Fictions?

Little Fictions is a unique literary event in which our talented troupe of actors performs rehearsed readings in front of live audiences. Starting life four years ago in Adelaide as Spineless Wonders Presents… , our home for the past year has been the very cool Knox St Bar in the Sydney suburb of Chippendale. Little Fictions has been part of the Sydney Writers Festival Program, Bondi Feast, Sydney Fringe and Wollongong Writers Festivals.

Why is there an entry fee for these submissions?

All proceeds from the $10.00 entry fee will go towards paying for the services of the hard-working and highly-skilled people who will curate and edit the Little Fictions Call Out submissions.

Little Fictions is a not-for-profit activity hosted by Spineless Wonders. Little Fictions actors and MC are paid from the door takings and, thanks to a recent grant from the Copyright Australia Cultural Fund, we are able to pay a small fee to authors whose work is performed at Little Fictions. We are currently looking for sponsors.

I have two pieces, each of 500 words in length. Can I include both in the one submission and pay only one entry fee?

No. We take time to judge each individual entry and your entry fee helps us pay for that careful attention.

Can I enter a short story which has won an award?

First up, congratulations! We are happy to consider submissions which have previously won, or been short-listed in, writing competitions provided the work has not been published.

If my submission is accepted, do I retain copyright?

By submitting to the Little Fictions Call Out, writers grant Little Fictions and Spineless Wonders licence to perform the work, to record and, if applicable, to offer this recording for broadcast on public radio and other free-to-air media. Intellectual Property shall remain with the writer. We request that Little Fictions be acknowledged in any future print publication of the work.

Do you accept line poetry?

No. Prose poems, yes. Line poems, no.

Can I submit my play script?

Little Fictions is single-voiced readings. That is, one actor at a time, stands at the microphone and reads to the audience. There are no props, no set, no costume and no other actors on stage. Just great words, the human voice and a truckload of acting ability. If your play script works in that format, go ahead and submit.
